1977 Refit Bayonne
QE2 arrived in New York early on December 3 and sailed for Bayonne (at the southwest end of New York harbour) at noon. I was in New York on business and went down to the pier at bout 9:30 am to see the ship and talk to friends that work on the ship. When I arrived at the pier, workmen were already using circular saws to prepare the area where the QM and QE suites were to be added. I stayed around until after QE2 sailed for Bayonne and then took a cab back to my hotel. I was back home in Montreal at the time QE2 returned from the refit on Decemebr 20.

Do you know if she was dry-docked for this refit or just alongside?

Dry docking in Bayonne
Yes the QE2 was deffintly dry docked during her 1977 refit in Bayonne, she had a light blue boot topping added, this was a new anti fouling paint that was used as a trial but only lasted untill her next dry docking a yeah later in Southampton when the origional orange boot topping was painted!

The blue boot topping was applied in QE2's late 1978 refit in Southampton rather than the 1977 refit at Bayonne, NJ. It was part of a 3-layer anti-fouling paint job being tested for the British Admiralty. The first layer was light grey, the second layer was light green and the top layer was light blue. The whole underwater hull received the same paint job. (Source: Conversation with former QE2 Cruise Director Brian Price in October 1979).
The blue boot topping was used for 2 years. QE2 still had the blue boot topping when I was aboard in August-September 1980. In QE2's late 1980 refit, the Cunard Red boot topping was restored but the underwater hull continued to have the grey-green-blue layered anti-fouling treatment.
