The davits were deliberately painted black as a design ploy aimed at reducing the superstructures height and so prevent the ship from looking top heavy. Not too sure about 1981, but certainly on entry into service the sides of the lifeboat deck were painted a neutral buff colour to further increase the effect.

The Khaki colour was still there in 1981 and for a few more
years. It can be seen in the distance. However, the white
windscreen seen in the foregorund was always white. It was only
the deckhouse walls on the boat deck that were khaki.
