This photo had to be taken after QE2's late 1979 refit, probably in December on the southbound portion of her Christmas-New Year's cruise. (QE2's northbound call near the end of that cruise was after New Year's). If you increase its brightness you can see that the stem anchor is no longer there and that its hawser hole has been plated over. The anchor had been permanently removed in New York on October 7, 1979 and the "gap" in the bow was clearly visible until her 1979 refit.

The National Geographic documentary "The Superliners Twilight of an Era" shows the QE2 with her blue bottom throughout the whole film, with good exterior shots of her at sea. If I remember correctly, she still had her stem anchor when this film was shot.

You are correct. The QE2 segments of "The Superliners: Twilight of an Era" were mostly filmed in the summer of 1979 before the stem anchor was removed in New York on October 7.

I believe the blue paint was to keep the bottom clear of barnicles  cunard tried to get everyone to like it when we got to southampton pierre cornlour myself both waiters at the time T.O.W and a galley officer cant remember his name were interviewd by bbc south today and were more or less told what to say  appararantly it had taken a long time to get the mixture right personally i didnt like it
