In 1990, the ship crossed the Atlantic from east to west in 105 hours 57 minutes under the command of Captain Woodall to mark Cunard's 150th anniversary arriving in Southampton on the 22nd July. Then she sailed around the Britain Cruise. On the 23rd she arrives in Cobh, Ireland on her maiden call. She is greeted by 60,000 people, including the Irish premier Charles Haughey. The following day she arrives in Liverpool on her maiden call, she is anchored in the Mersey.Hundreds of thousands of spectators and a flotilla of boats greeted QE2 as she approached her anchorage. On the 25th is back home to Greenock, her first return to Scotland since her launch in 1967.

On the 27th the Royal Review of Cunard and Navy ships at Spit Head by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia. The Royal party transfer by Royal barge to QE2. The Queen attends a reception in the Queen's Room, unveils a plaque to commemorate her visit in the Grand Lounge, and luncheon in the Columbia Restaurant. The Queen along the way stops to greet passengers.

Cunard's 150th Anniversary Empty Cunard's 150th in Trafalgar House Group News

Post  Guest Sat May 08, 2010 10:19 pm

Trafalgar House issued a special employee newsletter highlighting Cunard's 150th anniversary festivities. I found my copy in the 1990
QE2 Transatlantic brochure. The newsletter opens to 33 inches wide and 16 tall so not easy to scan

Cunard's 150th Anniversary Empty Re: Cunard's 150th Anniversary

I loved this cruise, I still have shivvers up my spine as I remember Liverpool. Truly the best experience I had on the ship. Both sides of the Mersey lined with tens of thousands of people lining the banks. A fantastic firework display then the Beatles songs and Ferry Cross the Mersey being blasted out from 10,000 watt speakers on board the ship. As we sailed out it felt like the ship going down a massive aisle in a church as the people on shoreside sang along and you could hear them singing so vividly above the music being played.

At Spitshead, I watched the Queen come on board (incidentally she drinks Gin, Dubonnet and a small dash of tonic, with ice and a slice). I then stood on the back of the QE2 watching the Red Arrows fly bye; I have a photograph somewhere of one of the pilots in his plane as they came within about 100 yards of us.

Memories; they're great

I remember Cobh was pretty special too, the number of people who turned out to see her was incredible. Loads of families with picnics had gathered on the hills all round the harbour and for miles down the estuary. I remember it was a sunny day, me and some mates took a taxi into Cork for a beer, we obviously weren't the only ones who thought this was a good idea because when it came time to head back to the ship we couldn't get a taxi, everyone was trying to get back at the same time!

But yes the Mersey was the best!
